Apple User Group

Great Inland Sea Macintosh Computer Group

For everyone in Manhattan

The group started as APPLE ][ - //e users group. The group added Macintosh very soon there after. For a long time it was Apple & Macintosh. We joined the UGC. This brought the group many good things as well as a feeling of belonging. Shortly there after, some of the members also purchased Intel machines. This was a time of change for the group, it went from 12 members to 75 at this time. And joined with the Nevada PC Users Group. During this time, AOL, made the User Group an offer that we could not urn down. We got AOL accounts for the whole of the membership and paid nothing for it.

The group started using chat modes, and email and the net before we knew it was a net. We just thought it was fun. AOL will always hold a warm place for the old guard of the membership for getting us started with Networking. The group still meets via AOL and AOL IM a lot. But in recent times, the focus of the group has changed a bit. There are more LINUX users and LINUX learners in the group. The Great Inland Sea recently became a Red Hat User Group as well. Most of the membership has LINUX on something they have. Red Hat was the flavor of choice due to the fact that more members had some kind of experience with it.

Every Friday night, at 10 p.m. in Bob's Diner a coffee, and guideance meeting. These can be a lot fun. In the last ten months the topics have ranged over AOL, COMPAQ, P, Intel Vs. K6, Apple Vs. everyone, Linux Vs. The Gate Keepers... and many other topics.Everyone is invited to join in the fun.Face to Face IRL meetings are posted via the club board. The Great Inland Sea was formed in 1985 at Yates Center, KS. but now is based out of sort of out of Manhattan, KS. It is a direct desendant from the Wichita Apple Club (Wichita, KS.) and the Plane Apple Club (also from Wichita, KS.) Many of the ideas and start-up information that was used to help form the Great Inland Sea, also came from the Wolf's Den BBS also of Wichita.

The Great Inland Sea joined with the Nevada PC Users Group in 1990. In 1991 the Great Inland Sea went to a directors method of management for the User Group. In 1992, the directors elected to discontinued the paper newsletter, and no long charge for dues. All meetings are now held via America On-line or at Bob's Diner in Manhattan, KS. The User Group uses e-mail GISMUG@aol.co, and the Internet for all of the User Group activities. As far as the membership knows - The Great Inland Sea is the first User Group to be totally electronic. The User Group does hold some special Face-to-Face (IRL Type one each meetings) from time to time for special subjects, demos, and events as well as meets weekly for social or face time at Bob's Diner
